CADWALADER ELLIS DESCENDANTS & KINDRED FAMILIES 1600
Although this endeavor is a treatise on the descendants of Cadwalader Ellis, a Welsh Yeoman, his family, kinsmen and neighbors, it would be barren if it were not shown in the context of time, place and events. After the Restoration of the monarchy (1660), the British government attempted to enforce "conformity" to the Anglican state (Church of England) Church of Wales by a series of punitive Acts which became known as the Clarendon Code. The penal legislation of the Restoration caused severe religious and social hardships for dissenters and for none more than those of the Society of Friends (Quakers). At the same time, Wales was experiencing extreme economic problems. The American colonies offered a golden opportunity of relief: there was land available and the prospect of religious, economic and political liberty. In the 1680`s a number of Welsh "Friends" accepted Wm. Penns offer and migrated to what is now Pennsylvania, forming the "Welsh Tract". [Excerpts for the above, taken from "Welsh Family History", pub. 1993 by the Association of Family Historical Societies of Wales]. ".......most of whom crossed the sea and founded the Colony of Pennsylvania, were of good old Welsh families, Yeomen, freeholders, well educated men." See p. 393 "Emigration of the Early Welsh Quakers to Pennsylvania." from the Pennsylvania Historical Society Magazine.
