Occupation: LAWYER Marysville, Ohio; Lawyer JAMES TODD HOOPES James Todd Hoopes, 86, a lifetime resident of Marysville and local attorney, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at his home. A Union County lawyer from 1947 until his retirement in 1999, he specialized in probate and estate matters in his office in the Union Block Building adjacent to the downtown square in Marysville. He was a 1934 graduate of Marysville High School and received a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Wooster in 1938 and a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1941. In 1948, he received a master's degree in political science from Ohio State University while he also taught. He was a member of the Union County Bar Association. He was a member of the Marysville First Congregational United Church of Christ and a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Marysville where he served as clerk of session for 25 years. He was mayor of Marysville during the mid 1950s and once served on the city's board of affairs. He was a former secretary for the Union County Chamber of Commerce and in 1952 was named one of the founding board members for Memorial Hospital of Union County. He formerly served as chairman for the Marysville Salvation Army unit. He assisted in the establishment of the Union County Historical Society and was the organization's first president. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II in the truck regiment of the Quartermaster Corps. He was stationed in Persia, delivering supplies to the Russian border and later made transports to Germany. He was a member of American Legion Post 79 in Marysville. He was born Dec. 23, 1916, in Marysville to the late Dr. Carl W. and Nelle G. McCloud Hoopes and was predeceased by a sister, Gene Shaffer. He is survived by his wife, Johnnie Nell Ray Hoopes whom he married March 24, 1962, in Columbus; a son, Lt. Cmdr. John McCloud (Allison) Hoopes, U.S. Navy, of Stuttgart, Germany; a grandson, Robert Todd Hoopes; a twin sister, Jane Orr, M.D., of Evansville, Ind.; a sister-in-law, Rebecca White of Kentucky; nieces, Jan Hefti of Springfield, Ill., and Betsy Holland of Flagstaff, Ariz.; a nephew, William Shaffer of Belchertown, Mass.; and many great-nieces and -nephew.Ann Allen read a note from Todd Hoopes ' sister asking that her donation be used for the improvement of McCloud Park.
