About. 1859 ================ Cannedy informationJournal by marlenewilson There is a file in the Smithville, TN Library that has much information about the Kennedy/Cannedy family beginning with John Cannedy from Ireland. The elderly historian there gave me copies of everything from his file. He was very nice and also informative. The letters are hand written from different members of the family over the years. One letter said John came to South Carolina in 1768 on the ship "Admiral Hawk", bringing a load of poor Irish Protestants. He was granted 200 acres in old Craven (now Darlington Co), S.C., on Lynche's Creek on April 23, 1768 by the Gov. of S.C. In 1807 he moved to Warren Co, TN, which later split into Warren and DeKalb Counties. He lived in Smithville until he moved to Ill. James, his son owned an inn outside of Smithville that now has a historical marker. There was an Admiral Hawk that came into South Carolina in 1768 but John Cannedy/Kennedy was not on the list. All I have found so far was a "brig" called "Ann and Margaret" that came from Ireland in 1767, with a John Kinney (could be him). Jean, I am wondering what sources you found for John's children's birth years, and the last name of Ann? Also, Mary Ann's husband's name? My line came from John C. Kennedy/Cannedy. He was a Register of Deeds and Surveyor for DeKalb County, TN, and lived and died there. He donated the land for the cemetery where he is buried to the town. He signed his name both John C. Kennedy and John C. Cannedy. Most of his children went by Kennedy. His son David Jasper is my gggrandfather, Josephine (Stout) is my ggrandmother and Gertrude Stout (Fetter) is my grandmother. 2.
