Margaret Frederick,

Married ‎17 May 1809 Rutherford Co., TN (45 years married) to:

man Hezekiah R Frederick‏‎, son of Phillip Frederick and Elizabeth Alice Kennedy‏.
Born ‎1784 NC, died ‎17 May 1854 Marion Co., AL‎, 69 or 70 years, buried ‎ Poplar Log Cemetery Marion County Alabama
Hezekiah R. Frederick, was born in NC 1784. Hezekiah died about 1854 in Marion Co., AL.

He married Ezilla Hobson in Rutherford Co., TN, 17 MAY 1809. Ezilla was born in Edgefield District, SC 1794. Ezilla was the daughter of Mourning Hobson and ???. Ezilla died 1860 in Marion Co., AL, at 66 years of age. Both Hezekiah & Ezilla are buried in the Old Poplar Log Cemetery located just North of the Buttahatchee River in Marion County, AL. (see Photos)

With the newly formed state of Alabama in 1819 came Hezekiah Frederick at age 35 with his wife and 7 children and all their possessions all the way from Tennessee to their farm in Blount County. A few years later with a new additon to the family, a son, named for the new County they were about to leave. In 1823, Hezekiah moved from Jefferson County, Alabama to Marion County, Alabama and settled on a little farm near Brinn in Central Marion County. One of the decisions for this move was probably predicated on the success of his brother-in-laws, John and Nathaniel Hobson, both of whom purchased land in Marion county in 1821. Another move to a location on Barn Creek, kept their respective farms still only a few miles apart; easily reached within an hours ride by horseback. Hezekiah's farm was located adjacent to an established spring which flows to this day just above Barn Creek. John Hobson located near the convergence of the Buttahatchee River and Barn Creek. Nathaniel Hobson located on the convergence of the Buttahatchee River with Hobson Creek, so named as he was the first white man to settle on this tributary near the present town of Whitehouse. Hezekiah could be found in the 1830, 1840 and 1850 US Census' of Marion County, Alabama. In the 1830 Census the Household count was 12 whites and 1 slave for a total of 13. The "slave" was a female not of her majority, probably a house servant and cook. The Agricultural Census listed Hezekiah as head of household in Marion Co., AL, 31 DEC 1850. Hezekiah had approximately 160 acres of land worth $250, 1 horse worth $60, 200 bushels of Indian Corn, 30 bushels of Oats, 50 pounds of butter and 300 pounds of beeswax. Hezekiah Frederick was born in North Carolina in 1784. His parentage has not been established at this time as research continues. On May 17, 1809, Hezekiah married Ezilla Hobson, daughter of Mourning Hobson. Mourning Hobson was the father to eight children: two boys, John and Nathaniel, previously mentioned, and six girls (more about the girls and who they married later). The wedding took place in Rutherford County, Tennessee where Hezekiah and Ezilla had seven of their ten children before moving to Alabama and completing their family. Early in their marriage, Hezekiah was commissioned an Ensign in the 22nd Regiment of the Tennessee Militia (the first regiment from Rutherford County). His commission was granted the 22nd of August, 1811. On June 18, 1812, war was declared on Great Britain and thus the War of 1812 commenced. Some 20 years later, Hezekiah Frederick and Hilkiah Burleson (father-in-law to Hezekiah's son Joshua) would testify to the fact that Hilkiah's nephew, David Burleson, had served in the War of 1812 and was in the Battle of New Orleans which took place during the month of January 1815. David was also a brother-in-law to Hezekiah through their wives. David had married Ezilla's sister, Ruth Hobson. Here it is necessary to establish the further relationships between the Hobsons and the Burlesons. Of the six Hobson girls, three would marry Burlesons. Eady married Moses in 1795 and ten years later brother David marries Sarah. Nine years after that, David, a nephew of the brothers, Moses and David, mentioned, marries the last of Mourning Hobson's daughters, Ruth. As for the rest of the daughters, Margaret (Peggy) married Soloman Pope who was a brother to Ezekial and Penelope Pope both of whom married a Burleson sister and brother, Margaret and Hilkiah; younger siblings of Moses and David. The last of Mourning's daughters, her given name lost, supposedly married John Whitley. If so, they lived not far away, a little south and east of Pleasant Grove Church where he acquired land in 1838 and in the same section as James Burleson who had purchased land in 1832. These new and early settlers of Marion County were not strangers to one another for they had been, for the most part, relatives, neighbors and friends in Tennessee. For the most part they were family, either by association or marriage. A great many, who had come this far to settle the new lands open to them, remained. Others, not so content and looking for newer frontiers open to them went on to Mississippi and Texas. Hardships there caused some to return and re-settle amongst friends and family back in Alabama prior to the Civil War. Following the Civil War a second wave of migration took place. Those embittered and incensed by the inhumanity and insanity of the war and the feeble efforts of reconstruction, decided to move on. Most went to Texas, some to Arkansas and Missouri, others to California, Oregon and Washington; all in search of a better way of life. (Robert D. Frederick 1990).

Hezekiah was commissioned a Justice of the Peace 10 APR 1832 in Marion County, and again 28 MAR 1838. (Note: A JP had the authority to fine a person brought before him for a misdemeanor; to sign off on court documents; to perform civil ceremonies and to commission those who were elected Sheriff to deputize other worthy citizens willing to uphold the law.)

CONFEDERATE DEAD BURIED IN KENTUCKY By Mrs. Sophie Fox Sea,

Historian Kentucky State Division, U.D.C.

I pray that some in ignorance of the last resting places of their beloved dead will find in this list that I have gathered with infinite reverence and pity the names sought for but never found, and know that the places where the dust of their loved ones are awaiting the trump of the archangel of the resurrection are indeed God's acres, cared for, beautified, even glorified, by the loving thought of comrades and friends.
