John C. Johnson was born in Union County, Ohio moving to Logan County, Ohio when he was 1 year old with his parents (Hosea and Nancy Johnson) and later lived in Hardin County, Kenton, Ohio.On January 17, 1864 John enlisted in the 82rd Regiment, Company A of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served in the Army of the Cumberland. On May 2nd he started on the Atlanta campaign and fought in the battles of Resaca, New Hope Church, Kenesaw Mountain, Peach Tree and all of the battles on the approach to Atlanta, including the bombardment of that city.He became sick with typhoid and was transferred to Nashville where he continued to do battle. He followed Hood's army into Florence, Alabama and was formed into a battalion of Sherman's soldiers. He later rejoined his regiment at Goldsboro. From there he marched to Raleigh and by water to Fort Schuyler, New York where he was mustered out and then discharged at Columbus (?) on July 7, 1865.Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson were connected to the M. E. Church. Mr. Johnson became a member of the Grange and filled the offices of Master, Overseer and Chaplain, each for two terms.
