Born 28 Dec 1827 Bellefontaine Ohio, died 15 Jan 1899 Champaign Illinois, 71 years, 1st marriage to: Maria Sullivan, 2nd marriage to: Isabel Sherfy Born on a farm near Bellefontaine, Ohio, he spent his childhood on the family farm. He received sufficient education to become a teacher. For several years he taught at Alexandria, Missouri. When not teaching he traveled about repairing clocks and watches, having learned that trade in Ohio. About 1854 he moved to Perrysville, Indiana where he married Isabel Sherfy. In 1862 the couple moved to Champaign where he opened a jewelry and repair shop. As business increased the need for a larger store was neccessary so in 1873 he built a three story brick, known as Garwood Block on Main Street in Champaign. Garwood's wife died in June 1864. He later married Maria Sullivan. She died in 1900 and is buried beside him. An active free mason, he was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 240 A.F. and A.M. Upon his death, the greater portion of his estate was given to found and maintain Garwood Home for Elderly Women. Until a few years ago, this was a brick building known as Garwood Home on North Market Street. |
