He joined the 65th Illinois Infantry, serving from July 17, 1863 to December 29, 1864. Elisha was captured at Harper's Ferry, Virginia by the Confederate Army. After being paroled he joined the 37th Kentucky Infantry as a private in Company B of the 37th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, commanded by Captain Jonathan W. Roark. Elisha Rich would later name one of his sons, Jonathan Roark Rich, after his commanding officer, Captain Jonathan Roark. Nancy Jane Ellis (Wife) b. Jul 1843 in Kentucky Jonathan W Roark moved to Foard County in 1895 from Denton County. He had previously served as Captain of Company B, 37th Kentucky Mounted Infantry. His wife, Nancy Jane had died before he left Denton county, He brought with him to Foard County his children, Mary Elizabeth,Henry Clay(Boss) Annie and James Edward(Jim) He passed away in 1918 and is buried in the Crowell Cemetary.
