Daniel Mathis inherited the island farm from his father, and like him, he spent his days on the island. "Daniel Mathis was one of the principle men of his time and place. He carried on his farm and also received considerable sums of money from his valuable fisheries, and also from the rent of his extensive meadows. He had the reputation of being an honest man, and one who was a stranger to deceit."[12]
